Easter Egg Hunt 2015

I thought it would be great fun to host an Easter Egg Hunt this year despite the 3 feet of snow we still had left on the ground and ice-cold temperatures.  It was a B.Y.O.B.B. event.  Bring your own baskets and boots! Better bring mittens, hats, parka and snow pants too!  We have the perfect setting, lots of farm fresh eggs and two resident rabbits that could help hide them so I set about planning, decorating and baking.  I’d like to share some of the things I did with you. First came the decorating.  I admit I am a Pinterest addict and almost all of the creative ideas I have come from there.  Take this adorable jelly bean tree.  It is so basic in design, the supplies are easy enough to find and you can make one in under an hour!  My kind of project. Find yourself a good branch…

Tomatoes in the Rouladen?

My mom is German and moved to the United States after she married my dad who was stationed there during the war.  My mom is also an amazing cook.  One of her specialties is a German dish called Rinderrouladen or Rouladen for short. Braised beef rolls.  They are a family favorite at our house and often times enjoyed only on special occasions.  It was my daughter’s birthday yesterday and I wanted to make her something special for dinner so this was a perfect choice. Rouladen is not hard to make and the flavor combination of these simple ingredients is a real winner.  There are many different variations of this recipe but I am going to share the one I grew up with and the one I continue to make for my family. The one that has absolutely no tomatoes in it at all.  Never has and never will. (family joke)…

Buffalo Superbowl Sandwiches!

With the Superbowl only a few days away I thought I’d share this quick, easy, delicious sandwich idea with you.  It’s a Rachael Ray 30-minute meal that I’ve been making for years but I never thought to make it for Superbowl until now. This is one of those recipes that you have carte-blanch.  It is very flexible so if you don’t have one ingredient you can use something else.  It can also be embellished with almost anything in your fridge.  It’s perfect!! To start take your chicken breasts and season them well with chili powder, paprika, salt and pepper.  OR.. whatever your heart desires.  I used Lawry’s season salt, pepper and a Cajun seasoning blend this time because that’s what I had on hand.  Really anything hot and spicy would work ( think buffalo! ).  Then take out your big fry pan and get it nice and hot.  Add olive…

Wonderful Fall Weekend

I have been so excited and I admit more than a little nervous about this coming weekend.  I’d been wanting to host an open house forever so I finally bit the bullet. It was long over due.  Anyway, I got a few nudges from Facebook friends and I knew it was now or never.  I think everyone had a ball.  I know we certainly did. October 17, 2014 We started this weekend on friday night when we had some very special guests at our house for dinner.  You know how we live close by the Abbey of Regina Laudis, actually smack dab in the middle of it?  Well my husband is very good friends with a lot of the people there and ever since we moved into our home we have been trying to get together with them for a house blessing.  Well 2 years have passed but we finally…

SwissStock 2014

In case you are wondering what a SwissStock is, well simply put, it is a gathering of all the Greater Swiss Mountain dogs and their families that are related in some way to our two Swissy’s, Dutch and Hauser.  A kind of family reunion. SwissStock came about last year after we hosted a small gathering at our house for Dutch and his siblings. You can read all about that reunion here if you’d like. One of the “Moms”(Marjie) called me and asked if we would be interested in hosting another Swissy event this time for ALL of the Aegis Swiss Mountain dogs and their families.  It would be for an entire weekend with everyone camping out in our big field, staying in the Bunkhouse, bunking in the big barn or even sleeping in their cars. A Swissy Woodstock, a weekend of peace, love and Swissy’s!  Welcome to Camp Swissy!  We set…

Our first visit at The Bethlehem Bunkhouse!

The Bethlehem Bunkhouse opened it’s door this weekend. Come on in and stay awhile. We had our very first guests come Friday night for a romantic get-away weekend.  I was feeling very excited because this was a women I had met from Facebook and we became good friends through the world of blogging.  If you have some time please go pay Bridget a visit here to read her wonderful stories and too funny adventures.  Give her a hug for me, ok? I wanted everything to be perfect for her and her husband Eric. I wanted them to feel at home. Does that look like a chicken to you? We had a major snowstorm the day before they came. Then more snow the next morning. Even more snow while they were here.  We got a whole lotta snow! All the way up to our dining room windows! I was afraid they…

Buckeyes ~ Peanut Butter Balls

Every year, for the past 30 years or so, at Christmas, my very bff or my “fluffy slipper” as I like to call her, and I get together to make peanut butter balls. They are messy to make because you have to dip them into melted chocolate and they take forever to roll because we both need a triple batch but it gives us time to catch up on each others lives, share a good laugh or two and ask ourselves why we do this every year?  It’s not because we both love peanut butter balls so much or that we really even have to have that many, it’s that I love my “fluffy slipper” and she loves her “old shoe” and it is tradition.  Some things can NEVER change. Through the years we have tried several different versions of peanut butter balls and they are all really good.  I…

Ding Dong Ditch

I have to say that Halloween is my favorite of all the holidays.  I think part of it is because of the season.  I love the colors of autumn, the smells, the cool air, the changes all around.  I also think another reason is because you don’t have any pressures with Halloween.  No shopping, no wrapping, no stress, no worries.  Just plain old Fun!! Every year when my 3 youngest boys were little we used to pick a family that we were friends with to “ding, dong, ditch”.  Starting on October 1st we would begin to collect items that we felt this particular family might enjoy.  A fall scented candle, a mini pumpkin or two, a scary book the family could share.  A loaf of my pumpkin bread with caramel icing.   Small toys, trinkets and candy would get added to the bag, and the excitement would grow.  My children…
