Buckeyes ~ Peanut Butter Balls

Every year, for the past 30 years or so, at Christmas, my very bff or my “fluffy slipper” as I like to call her, and I get together to make peanut butter balls. They are messy to make because you have to dip them into melted chocolate and they take forever to roll because we both need a triple batch but it gives us time to catch up on each others lives, share a good laugh or two and ask ourselves why we do this every year?  It’s not because we both love peanut butter balls so much or that we really even have to have that many, it’s that I love my “fluffy slipper” and she loves her “old shoe” and it is tradition.  Some things can NEVER change. Through the years we have tried several different versions of peanut butter balls and they are all really good.  I…

Candle Making 101

I am such a candle junkie it is ridiculous!  I can not walk into a store without buying a candle.  I have them everywhere.  I’m pretty sure I built a good portion of the Yankee Candle Store in Massachusetts.  Of course I have my favorite scents and they change with the season.  Springtime I must have my Lilac candle, summer it’s my sage, fall I start with macintosh, then I change to fallen leaves, autumn wreath and finally pumpkin.  Winter time brings out my cranberry chutney, balsam fir, christmas wreath and one or ten others.  I don’t know what this obsession of mine is but I love to walk into a room and have it smell… good.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like my house smells bad ( well maybe for a little while when Bambi came to stay) but there is something about a candle burning that makes…

Nutcrackers

I have a little problem.  More like an obsession, maybe it is more like a sickness or an addiction.  It comes and it goes.  Most of the time I’m fine, it doesn’t affect me at all, I can hide it and nobody even knows. From January to October I don’t even think about my little problem but then when November rolls around it hits me again and by December I have a full-blown case of ….. Nutcrackers!!!! It is my girlfriends fault, I blame her. My best friend forever turned me on to nutcrackers. Every year her and I get together to make peanut butter balls for Christmas and she would have Nutcrackers everywhere.  They were in every room of her house, big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones.  They sat on top of cabinets and counters, they stood watch on the windowsills, they peeked out from the bookshelves.…

Goat First-Aid Kit

If you have animals you need to have an emergency first-aid kit available.  It is a must and something that can make the difference between life and death.  I speak from experience… I found out the hard way. Each animal is different and will have different needs so prepare accordingly.  It is especially important when you are dealing with livestock because unlike small animals, dogs or cats, most times you will need to address any issues that arise on your own.  A trip to the vet isn’t always easy and if you do have a vet that deals with livestock they may not be able to get to your house right away and you will need to be prepared. The first thing you want to do is keep a list of emergency numbers posted.  You can keep one in the barn or coop, and another one inside your first-aid kit,…

Cajeta’s story

Last weekend our farm family suffered a tragedy.  Our two Nubian goats became very sick with bloat and Cajeta our little momma passed away.  Bloat is often times caused by overeating, a change in diet, eating foods that produce a lot of gas and even certain types of weeds can create an imbalance causing bloat.  They say if a goat is stressed from a move to a new place it can weaken their rumen making them more susceptible to bloat.  I’m not sure what caused our two babies to bloat, maybe a combination of different things, but they did and it was fatal for Cajeta. It was a Thursday night and our son could hear the goats outside screaming.  When we went to check on them we knew immediately that something was wrong.  Their abdomens were obviously distended and they were screaming and grinding their teeth.  It was a sign…
